Question 1

Q: How common is tongue-tie in babies?

Accepted Answer

Tongue-tie, also known as ankyloglossia, is relatively common in newborns, affecting approximately 4-11% of babies. It is more common in males than females. Understanding its prevalence can help parents recognize the importance of early detection and intervention.

Question 2

Q: What are the signs and symptoms of tongue-tie?

Accepted Answer

Signs of tongue-tie in newborns include difficulty latching onto the breast, poor weight gain, clicking sounds while breastfeeding, and limited tongue movement. Babies with tongue-tie may also experience breastfeeding pain and inadequate milk transfer. If you notice any of these symptoms, consulting a healthcare provider or lactation consultant is recommended.

Question 3

Q: Can tongue-tie affect speech development?

Accepted Answer

Yes, untreated tongue-tie can potentially impact speech development in some children. The restriction caused by ankyloglossia can affect proper tongue movement necessary for clear speech articulation. It's important to address tongue-tie early to minimize the risk of speech difficulties later on.

Question 4

Q: When should I seek medical advice for my baby's tongue-tie?

Accepted Answer

If you suspect your baby has tongue-tie or are experiencing breastfeeding difficulties, it is recommended to seek medical advice from a healthcare provider or lactation consultant. They can evaluate your baby's oral anatomy and provide guidance on possible interventions and solutions.
