Question 1

Are allergies a concern when introducing purees?

Accepted Answer

It is natural to worry about potential allergies when introducing new foods to your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing allergenic foods, such as peanuts and eggs, between 4 to 6 months of age, as early introduction may actually decrease the risk of developing allergies. However, it's important to consult with your baby's healthcare provider before introducing allergenic foods, especially if there is a family history of food allergies.

Question 2

How can I prevent choking hazards when introducing textured purees?

Accepted Answer

To minimize the risk of choking, ensure that the texture of the purees is suitable for your baby's age and developmental stage. Start with smooth and runny purees before gradually increasing the thickness and introducing small soft pieces for your baby to practice chewing. Always supervise your baby during meal times and avoid foods that pose a high choking risk, such as whole nuts, large chunks of fruits and vegetables, or sticky foods like peanut butter.

Question 3

What is baby-led weaning, and is it a safe approach?

Accepted Answer

Baby-led weaning is an alternative approach to introducing solids where babies are encouraged to self-feed with appropriately sized finger foods. It can be a safe method when done under proper supervision. However, it's important to note that some babies may not have the necessary chewing skills for finger foods until around 8 to 9 months of age. It's recommended to consult with your baby's healthcare provider before attempting baby-led weaning.

Question 4

Can I make my own baby food at home?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! Making your own baby food can be a great way to provide nutritious and homemade options for your little one. Ensure that you follow proper food safety guidelines, such as washing your hands, using fresh ingredients, and properly storing the prepared baby food. It's also important to introduce a variety of foods to meet your baby's nutritional needs.
