Question 1

Q: Can I give my baby solid food before 6 months?

Accepted Answer

A: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding or formula feeding for the first 6 months as the sole source of nutrition for babies. Solid foods should not be introduced before 4-6 months of age. At around 6 months, babies start showing signs of readiness for solid foods, such as sitting up with support, showing interest in food, and being able to push food out of their mouths with their tongues.

Question 2

Q: What are common allergenic foods and when should I introduce them?

Accepted Answer

A: Common allergenic foods include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. Contrary to previous beliefs, it is now advised to introduce highly allergenic foods early, around 4-6 months of age, to help reduce the risk of allergies. However, if you have a family history of severe food allergies, consult with your pediatrician or allergist before introducing these foods.

Question 3

Q: How do I know if my baby is ready for textured foods?

Accepted Answer

A: As babies grow, they develop the ability to chew and swallow more textured foods. Signs that your baby is ready for textured foods include being able to sit up unsupported, showing an interest in reaching for and grabbing food, and successfully moving pureed food to the back of their mouth without gagging or spitting it out. Gradually introduce mashed or well-cooked small pieces of vegetables as your baby becomes more comfortable with textures.

Question 4

Q: How much water should I give to my baby?

Accepted Answer

A: Until around 6 months of age, breast milk or formula provides all the necessary hydration for your baby. After 6 months, you can gradually introduce a small amount of water in a cup during meal times. Offer water in between meals if there's a risk of dehydration due to hot weather or illness. Consult with your pediatrician to determine the appropriate amount based on your baby's individual needs.
